Being
an older (61 yo), newcomer to track racing has presented a few challenges for
me, and for my coach. My fitness and endurance has not been an issue but my leg
strength seemed to let me down in sprinting and standing starts on the track.
During
my years of marathon running, mountain bike racing and playing basketball, I had
never done any weight training so to introduce it to my training program had to
be gradual and well structured. Learning the correct technique was very
important to avoid any injuries.
In the 6 months that I have been training in "the 'Haus" my leg strength and core strength has improved, the benefits showing up in my flying 200 times and match sprinting races. The combination of my normal endurance training coupled with sprint training and weight training has been a huge benefit to me so far this season.
