We're a small box gym in a garage in North Ringwood, Melbourne. We're not open to the general public. All our clients are introduced by existing clients and are hand-picked.  If you want to know more, contact us by email.


History & Philosophy

Where we came from and why

The PowerHaus was started in the winter of 2009 to fill a void.  Big-Box gyms are everywhere, full of isolation machines and empty of real commitment to athletic development.  They're the McDonalds of fitness which is why you often find them in shopping centres near the food courts full of rubbish food.  The Big-Box gyms have expensive contracts, rooms full of expensive (and mostly useless!) equipment and they rely on signing up people to 'get in shape' with no real idea of what that even means.  They have televisions because the exercises you can do there don't require you or their staff to pay attention to what you're doing.  There's lines in front of the pecdeck machine and no-one goes near (if they even have one) the squat rack.  Bumper plates?  Olympic lifting?  Woe betide the fool who chalks up for a deadlift or drops a heavy snatch from overhead.  You'll get kicked out if you even tried to do it.  Try and find their lifting platform.

It's expensive to train people to teach squats, deadlifts and the Olympic lifts properly.  Many even in the 'fitness industry' believe that the big compound lifts, the squat, the deadlift, the press and the Olympic lifts are somehow bad for you.   They're hard to do and can be hard to learn, but that's why they work.  People who can teach and supervise these big lifts are rare and are not found in the Big-Box chain store gyms.  Your athletic performance is not the focus of these places.  They don't care, they have your 2 year contract and if you never actually show up once you've paid, all the better.  Emptying your wallet into their bank account and selling your eyeballs to the advertisers in their junk magazines is their concern.

At the 'Haus, we're athletes and coaches.  That means we want you see you perform better at your sport and we play sports ourselves.  Our facility is small and we know all our clients by name.  We take the time to teach the big lifts, the hard ones that actually make you stronger and more powerful, faster and more capable of performing in your sport.  We don't just point you towards the leg extension machine and remind you to pay your bills on time.  We want you to be better at your sport and we want you come back regularly.  We want to know how you played or raced on the weekend.  We're proud of the athletes we work with.  We care and as part of your team, we're committed to developing strength and conditioning programs to help make you a better athlete.  We want to work with your coaches from your sport to integrate your strength and conditioning with your coaches plans.

We looked at the Crossfit model and were inspired.  We love Crossfit but we're not Crossfit.  We love their philosophy and if your aim is to get into shape we'd recommend Crossfit as the best overall generalist program that we've ever seen.  We're specialists where Crossfitters are generalists.  They say specialisation is for insects, and we're proud to be insects.  Big, strong insects with a nasty bite and a sting in our tails to make your competition take notice.  Bearing that in mind, we have all the equipment to do the main Crossfit WODs and if you're a Crossfit athlete we want to know you and make you welcome.

Our aim is, by making you perform better, to make the 'Haus into one of the best places to train for strength, power and endurance with some of the best staff in Victoria.  It's a big goal and one we're keen to take on.  We don't earn that without your success. Your success is our success.
